Bai Juyi: Expect to Give to Yuan the Eighth, Wishing He Was My Neighbor
Expect to Give This As a Gift to Yuan the Eighth,
Wishing He Was My Neighbor
Yu Yu Yuan Ba Bu Lin Xian You Shi Zeng
Ping sheng xin ji zui xiang qin
Yu yin qiang dong bu wei sheng.
Ming yue hao tong san jing ye
Lu yang yi zuo liang jia chun.
Mei yin zan chu you si ban
Qi dei an ju bu ze lin?
Ke du zhong shen shu xiang jian
Zi sun chang zuo ge qiang ren.
Expect to Give This As a Gift to Yuan the Eighth, Wishing
He Was My Neighbor
Our mind and hearts of human experience most like relatives of each other
Want to conceal my talents behind an eastern wall.
In the fine moonlight we could walk the same footpaths in the evening
Our two houses would have green poplar trees sprouting.
Because I had to go outside to work, now think more of our friendship
How can I not want to select my neighbors for a peaceful life?
This way we could count on seeing each other throughout our lives
Our children and grandchildren to play together without partitions or walls.
